edit Blu-ray in Avid Media Composer

In fact, there is hardly anything Avid Media Composer doesn’t support. It is completely geared towards any kind of workflow, be it cinema-based, television-based or internet-based. However, you want to import some clips on Blu-ray into Avid Media Composer for editing, you’ll be disappointed.

Since the lossy video compression format DNxHD was introduced in 2004. DNxHD is a video codec intended to be usable as both an intermediate format suitable for use while editing and as a presentation format. DNxHD is very similar to JPEG. Every frame is independent and consists of VLC-coded DCT coefficients. It is widely recognized in the professional market for use in post-production that supports up to 1080P and brings Avid Media Composer editors a strong processing capacity with stunning 1080P resolution. And, I am looking for a solution that will allow me to rip and convert Blu-rays to DNxHD for editing in Avid Media Composer. I have downloaded the trial versions of both Blu-ray Ripper and its video converter but neither seems to be able to do the job:

  • Blu-ray Ripper properly reads the Blu-ray but, has no option for exporting to DNxHD codec and the ability to modify or create custom presets seems to be very limited.
  • Video Converter will output to DNxHD but, does not properly read the Blu-ray.

Obviously, this Blu-ray ripping software is not the Blu-ray to DNxHD ripper that I am looking for so I have to wander around if there is Blu-ray ripper that rips Blu-rays to DNxHD? While I was ripping my Blu-rays to MOV, I see Acrok Video Converter Ultimate. Although it does not support iTunes M4V movies, Acrok works great for Blu-ray, DVDs and I found a profile for DNxHD and guess what? It is working flawlessly and I assume Acrok Video Converter Ultimate Converter is the very Blu-ray to Avid Media Composer ripper and you can also have it to rip and convert Blu-ray disc to DNxHD for editing on Windows 10 and macOS 10.15 Catalina.

If you have your Blu-ray saved to the hard drive instead of on the disc, click the drop-down menu to load from Blu-ray ISO or Blu-ray folder. You will then be asked to main or all movies. I’d like to recommend Main Movies Only for most Blu-rays. All Movies are recommended for TV shows or workout Blu-rays etc.
